Inarijärvi-lake is suitable for kayaking. The lake is the second largest in Finland, 100 km long and 60 km wide. There are many islands in the lake, over 3000. There are many narrow and sheltered straits which are called nuori. The network of the uninhabited cottages is quite exhaustive.
There is a good 1:100000 map of the lake and a sea card.

Route suggestion:

1. Ukonjärvi - Jääsaari cottage approx. 20 km
2. Jääsaari - Kärppäsaari cottage approx. 20 km
3. Kärppäsaari - Kahkusaari cottage approx. 12 km
4. Kahkusaari - Suovassaari cottage approx. 15 km
5. Suovassaari - Ukko -Inari village approx. 20 km
6. Inari - Petäjäsaari cottage approx. 25 km
7. Petäjäsaari - Ukonjärvi approx. 20 km

The route is very sheltered and you can plan the route according to the wind.

Between the Kärppäsaari - Kahkusaari is a more open area so you might want to watch the weather more carefully.

In Ukko-saari-island you must stop and check out the old Sámi sacrificial island.

You can stay the night in Inari in a campground or in a hotel. When you want to spend a day in Inari you can go to the Sámi Museum Siida and Northern Lapland Nature Centre.

One of the best canoeing routes in Northern Lapland is on the Ivalo river. If you are a novice, you can participate on a guided canoeing trip on the Ivalo, Inari, Teno or Lemmenjoki rivers, amongst others.
